Malawi Facing Acute Food Insecurity

February 7,2025

The National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) has disclosed that the country currently holds stock levels of 40,000 metric tonnes in maize .

The announcement coincides with the 2024 Malawi  Vulnerability Assessment (MVAC) report,, which predicted that approximately 4.2 million Malawians will face  high levels of acute food insecurity in the country.

In an interview with MIJ FM's Alex Batison, NFRA Executive Director, George Macheka, said  that due to insufficient maize  stock levels , the agency is in  the process of  importing maize from Tanzania.

Macheka disclosed that almost 20,000 metric tonnes will be  imported from Tanzania in two  phases, starting with 95,000 metric to enhance Malawi's food security.
