Commissioner Francis Lazalo Kasaila has stepped down from his role in the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) with effect from April 23, 2025, following what the commission described as personal reasons.

The development was confirmed in a public notice issued on April 24, 2025 signed by Sangwani Mwafulirwa, MEC 's Director of Media and Public Relations.

Kasaila , who also chaired the Media , Civic and Voter  Education Committee, is being acknowledged for his service and contributions during his tenure.

The Commission expressed it's appreciation for his efforts in enhancing civic engagement and media coordination during electoral processes.
In a statement the Commission did not detail the exact reasons behind Kasaila's resignation , it noted that the move complies with section 4(8) of the Malawi Electoral Commission Act.

The section permits a Commissioner to resign at any time by submitting written notice to the President.

However, efforts to hear from Kasaila's  went futile as his phone went un answered.

A senior official within the Commission who opted not to be named ,commented indirectly on Kasaila's departure saying.

" His exit, though personal ,leaves a gap in strategic communications especially ahead of upcoming civic programs."

In the official statement ,Mwafulirwa assured the public that the commission remains functional and legally constituted.

"Following this development, the Commission is now composed of five members and the chairperson, this number meets the legal threshold for a quorum as the law requires the presence of not less than four Commissioners ."he stated.

Political analyst Martha Ndala weighed in ,noting Kasaila's exit comes at a sensitive time.

"With elections approaching, any change in the Commission's structure can raise eyebrows ,the Commission must continue to demonstrate transparency and readiness."

A concerned citizen , Isaac Mwawa, attributed that Kasaila's resignation will perpetrate suspicions from the opposition parties.

" There are rumors that Kasaila is the devil in disguise ,that he is conspiring to  disturb the 16 September general elections." he said.

As the Malawi Electoral Commission continues with its duties ,the resignation of Commissioner Kasaila marks  a significant moment , not only for the institution but also for the country's electoral processes stakeholders and the public will now be watching closelyto see how MEC manages this transition while maintaining public confidence and operational effectiveness.
