NPL, MISA Bring Newsroom to MIJ Classroom

Nation Publications Limited(NPL) and the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Malawi chapter brought news into a classroom at Malawi Institute of Journalism (MIJ)) in Lilongwe to give students experience in real- world reporting dynamics.
According to , NPL and MISA , this collaboration is part of a broader effort to nurture responsible Journalism by connecting media institutions with academic spaces.
Suzyo Chitete, investigative journalist and assistant bureau chief at NPL , underscored the value of journalists , sources , media houses and the audience.
Chitete , explained that students often learn the rules of journalism in textbooks but rarely feel the pressure of a tickling clock.
"We want you to learn how to verify facts under pressure and make ethical decisions." he said.
Golden Matonga, chair of MISA Malawi and investigative reporter with the Platform for Investigative journalism highlighted mentorship aspect of the exercise.
He noted that pairing seasoned Journalists with students helps to encourage them work hard.
Matonga observed that many aspiring reporters are lazy and hesitant to pursue in- depth stories because of lack of confidence
"By guiding them through every step from source cultivation to narrative structuring helps students to build confidence and sharpening their investigative instincts. " he said.
Cidric George, a diploma student at MIJ attributed that the session was an eye- opener.
He admitted that while he understood the principles of balanced reporting, he had never practiced them in a live setting and the importance of clear communication.
" I realised that a great story is not just about facts it is also about asking the right questions and listening closely. "
Blessings Shaibu , a certificate student concurred with George that the initiative has inspired them greatly.
" It is different when you hear from someone who's been on the ground and am very much encouraged to ventured into investigative journalism. "
Speaking after the session MIJ Centre coordinator and Lecturer , Iwell Thawi said the experience was not just refreshing but vital in shaping well baked journalists.
" We always teach them , but having professionals here adds depth and realism to their studies. "he said.
By bringing the newsroom into the classroom, NPLand MISA have not only inspired the future journalists but reaffirmed the power of experienced - based learning and shaping informed ethical and courageous media professionals.
