Afidep Donates K4. 5 M to MISA Malawi

The African Institute for Development Policy (Afidep) has challenged Joournalist in the country to prioritize on reporting for development and health financing issues. 

Afidepo Chief of operations Wickliffe Okinda made the call on Thursday when he was presenting a K4. 5 million cheque to Media Institute of Southern Africa Malawi chapter (MISA) towards the 2025 Word Press Freedom Day Celebration scheduled on 3 May 2025.

" The support will motivate journalists to report more  and bring to light critical issues that might otherwise remain in shadows." Okinda said. 

MISA Malawi National Governing Council member Nathan Majawa acknowledged that health sector in Malawi is still facing challenges. 

"It is imperative that the media plays a leading role in ensuring that governments and stakeholders allocate atleast  15 percent of the national budget to health sector as stipulated in the Abuja Declaration. " Majawa said. 

The money will be used to conduct training workshops and produce resource materials aimed at improving science communication.

"We are very grateful to Afidep for boosting the media in Malawi." he said.

The K4.5 million donation marks another milestone in the collaboration between media and research institutions in Malawi with hopes that such partnerships will continue to boost the quality of journalism and contribute to informed  public discourse.

The Word Press Freedom Day celebrating will be held under the theme Media for a well- informed electorate.
