Uladi Mussa , famously known as " Chenji Golo" has lost the MCP primaries in Salima south at Chipoka 1,dashing his hopes of reclaiming his former parliamentary seat under a new party.
Uladi Anthusafunana Basikolo Chenji Golo Mussa a Malawian politician and educator , was a former Minister of Home Affairs and internal security in the DPP led government , who was appointed by former President Bingu wa Mutharika in 2004 has suffered a defeat during the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) primary elections in the southern part of Salima district, managing only 63 votes.
Madalitso Brown Mazombwe won the race with 630 votes , followed by Richard Kwalira with 388 votes, and Christopher Mmanja with 340 votes.
MCP Director of Economic Affairs , Henry Mumba, who presided over the elections , announced the results.
Mussa once a dominant force in Malawian politics's recent fall from grace in the MCP primaries has left many in Salima south stunned with party insiders citing mistrust and internal resistance to his defection from DPP as contributing factors.
MCP constituency committee member , who requested for anonymity attributed that , it's a message from the grassroots . People of Salima south want consistency and loyalty to the party.
"Bringing someone who was a DPP cabinet minister and giving him a ticket would have created confusion and rebellion among our long - serving members ." he said
Mussa who defected from DPP in 2019 , has since branded himself a reformist under the " chenji Golo " -a name meant to symbolize his political transformation.
However, his political transformation messaging did little to win over core MCP supporters who saw his move as opportunistic rather than ideological
Amadi Abudullah , MCP supporter in Salima highlighted that he respect Mussa's contribution to national politics , but , MCP is a party of principles.
" You cannot just switch jerseys and expect to be captain. " he said.
Meanwhile, DPP members reacted to Mussa's loss with mixed emotions , with some calling " karma " and others using it as a rallying cry for unity in their ranks.
DPP senior official in Salima district , states that " Change Gaol" has finally faced the consequences of political betrayal.
" He left us thinking MCP would treat him like loyalty , but the people have spoken loud and clear. "he said .
However, others in DPP have expressed sympathy.
Ellen Chavula , a DPP area committee chairperson in Salima attributed that , he was a strong mobilizer no doubt.
"Maybe he underestimated how deep party loyalty runs in MCP. " She said.
Speaking to reporters before leaving the venue Mussa lamented that, despite his defeat he will remain calm .
" Politics is a game of numbers and timing . I respect the decision of the delegates . " he said.
Uladi Mussa 's failure to secure the MCP candidacy in Salima south signals the complex dynamics of party loyalty , voter trust and political reinvention in Malawi's elvoving democracy. As " Change Goal " retreats to assess his next move , both MCP and DPP watch closely - a reminder that in Politics not every switch guarantee s a goal .
