k8 Billion Vision unveiled:Malawi Launches Mvera Smart City to Drive Economic Transformation

Malawi's Economic future took a bold turn on Friday, 16th May 2025, when the inaugural Mvera investors Breakfast was held at Bingu International Convention Centre(BICC) in Lilongwe , unveiling the Mvera Innovation Smart City. 

The event  hosted by the Malawi Regulatory Authority (MACRA) ,brought together investors, government officials and business leaders to discuss the ambitious K8 billon project. 

Brigadier General John Chaka Junior, Chairperson of the Mvera Development Corporation , told the gathering that the Smart City project marks a major milestone for national development. 

"The Mvera Innovation Smart City project is more than a project; its a national symbol of transformation , a place where modern technology meets Malawian identinty and human potential." he said. 

The Mvera Innovation Smart City described as a landmark development is expected to become a hub of innovation and economic activity redefining how infrastructure, digital technology and investiment intersect in the country. 

According to , MACRA Director General Daud Suleman , the initiative is being spearheaded by MACRA which has so far secured land , processed a title deed successfully relocated to affected people in two years. 

"K8 billion  has already been invested in Smart City initiave , underscoring the government 's commitment to long-term infrastructure development." he said

As Malawi sets its sights on becoming a regional powerhouse, the Mvera Innovation Smart City could symbolize a new era in natural growth  combining technology, identity and opportunity for generations to come

"Tomato Shortage Hits Lilongwe:Prices Skyrocket as Supply Dwindles"

Picture: Tomato affected by pests and diseases.  February 6 ,2025 A severe shortage of Tomatoes has hit Lilongwe, leaving consumers scrambling to find the staple ingredient and driving prices up by as much as 50%. The scarcity, attributed to a combination of factors including drought, pests and diseases, has affected major markets in Lilongwe.  "We used to sell tomatoes at MK250 each tomato but now we are selling at MK500" said Fostina Kumkwezu, a vendor at Kawale market. "It has been a challenge to find Tomatoes and when we do they are  expensive."said Mary Chirwa a consumer. The Ministry of Agriculture has attributed the shortage to a combination of factors including pests and diseases. "We are working with Farmers to address the challenges they are facing",said Ministry of Agriculture spokes person Priscilla Mateyu. The Ministry of Health conduts walk-in interviews for Health workers

By: Jane Chimchere  April 2, 2025 The Ministry of Health has launched a nationalwide recruitment drive to 6,000 health workers in April, aiming to address staffing shortages in health facilities across Malawi through walk- in interviews at regional centres.  In a memo signed by secretary to to health Samson Mndolo , the initiative aims to fill critical vacancies in various healthcare facilities , particularly in rural areas where medical personnel are scare.  According to the statement from the Ministry, the recruitment process will priotize candidates willing to serve in rural health centres and district hospitals , prosectives applicants who are unwilling to work in these areas have been advised not to attend the interviews.  The positions available include senior biomedical engineers , clinic officers , pharmacists just to mention a few. To qualify applicants must have graduated from accredited imstitutions and be registered with relevant professional bodies....
